Denotation and Connotation

Denotation:
I see a boy who is about the age of 9.His face looks sad.In the background I see a wall some buildings and some trees. The meaning of the message is trying to say if you don't have toilets you will die because of diseases. You can see the water aid logo at the top of the screen.

Connotation:
His facial expression could suggest he is sad probably because he doesn't have a proper toilet. The location of this advert is somewhere in Africa because of his colour and the type of clothes he is wearing as the colour is off and looks old.

Analysis:
This effects the audience as they feel sorry and sympathise with him as he hasn't got a toilet or any clean water.

Key Concepts film poster analysis

Image result for return of the jedi poster

Film Poster: Star Wars: Return Of The Jedi

Language: There are many ways we can see that this is a film poster. One way is because if the layout, it has a title, the casts, director info, release date, and company info- so we know its a film poster as it uses many conventions. They give the audience an insight on the genre and type of movie it will be. We can see that this is Sci-Fi because of the name and is from a well established movie chain already, it draws the audience in watching it.

Industries: The film was produced by the company Lucasfilm (known for making franchises), they are gaining the money from box-office and the producer was Howard Kazanjian (Vice producer of Lucasfilm). It was directed by Richard Marquand and the story was written by George Lucas. The lead roles in the film were by Mark Hamil (Luke Skywalker), Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa) and Harrison Ford (Han Solo).

Audience: The film is targeted at people of mixed gender. However, the genre of the film is Sci-Fi/ fantasy so people who like those genres will be into this film. It is suitable for people at any age.

Representation: It shows a dominant representation of male behaviour- the men in the film poster are quite masculine. Han Solo and Luke have weapons in their hands and Darth Vader has biggest face suggesting he is a dominant character. Also, the women are stereotypical, Leia is seen as wearing less clothing which makes her seem vulnerable and inferior, so links with how she is a Princess. However, she can be seen as powerful because of her determined and stern facial expression.
